Most homeowners are getting more and more conscious with their indoor living spaces. In fact, most of them prefer furnishings that are unique yet satisfying. The more personalized, the better. This is where braided rugs come in the picture. So what are braided rugs? And why are they one of the most well loved types of rugs over the years?
Braided rugs are those rugs made out of braided wool or cloth. Traditionally, these rugs are either circular or oval in shape though we can find some rectangular braided rug nowadays. These are undeniably perfect accents to your living and dining areas. Like any other types of rugs, braided rugs also come with different styles, sizes, and colors. You can easily obtain these rugs from home furnishing shops, carpet boutiques, and even over the Internet.
However, most people prefer homemade braided rugs. What are these rugs? Simple. They are made out of recycled clothing, dress, and any other unwanted stuff you can find from your wardrobes. If you prefer to have braided rugs with that personalized touch, the best way is to make your own rugs. All it takes is a little creativity with a whole lot of patience. If you wish to know how to make braided rugs, there are certain instructional materials that you find from local bookstores. However, there really is no need for you to do that if you know the basics of braiding. The first thing to do is to choose your wardrobe. As much as possible, when durability is the main concern, it is more preferable to use woolen materials. Examples of pieces of clothing made from woolen materials are your coats as well as your bathrobes. But if you cannot find much of these, cottons will do, though you should be aware that they tend to become too rigid and stiff to braid properly. With those made out of nylon and other synthetics, they do not have enough substance in making a good braided rug.
After you have gathered your materials, next thing to do is to cut your materials in long strips, approximately two inches in width, fold it raw edges, and start weaving three strips to form it into braids. Continue doing this until for about three to four inches. From the shortest strip’s end, slide new strip by the end of your first braided strips, rolling the first two strips together to form a single strip. Repeat the process each time you go, about three inches by the end of each strip, until you will come to your desired length and measurement. After doing this, is it up to you if you dye your braided strips with different colors. If you intend to do this, just make sure that you use reliable dyeing materials so as not to compromise the looks of your braided rugs.
The next thing is forming your braided strips into your desired shapes. Basically, circles and ovals are the most advised braided rug shapes because it is easier to make them that way. However, if you prefer to go beyond the extremes, shaping them according to your preference will also do, though you need to be knowledgeable about it. Forming it takes a lot of effort and time. For you not to have a hard time, lay your strips on your floors and start shaping from there. Use durable weaving materials as much as possible to keep your braided strips in place.
Nothing really beats having braided rugs that you yourself made. Not only are you able to recycle your unused clothing but you are also able to bring out the creative side in you. But if you still prefer to go for the ready made ones, there are a lot of choices for you to choose from. Cheap braided rugs are also good finds in wholesalers and second hand shops. Your options are varied. Just make sure you get the best qualities at fairly affordable prices.
